Before the water lilies. Monet discovers Giverny, 1883-1890

To mark the centenary of Claude Monet’s death on December 5, 1926, the Musée des Impressionismes is organizing an exceptional exhibition devoted to the artist’s early years in the village of Giverny, from his arrival in 1883 to the end of 1890, when he became the owner of his house and was able to begin creating his garden.

During these seminal years, Monet explored his new surroundings: poppies, poplars, meadows and hills, the courses of the Epte and Seine rivers, a whole topography shaped by rain and fog, sun and clouds.

The exhibition brings back to the very site of their creation some thirty works through which the master of Impressionism made the village and its surroundings his own, offering visitors the magical experience of contemplating Giverny’s landscapes through Monet’s eyes, both inside and outside the rooms.
